When it comes to planning a trip, those with disabilities or who use a mobility aid often have to work a little harder. Finding hotel rooms or attractions that are accessible is imperative, but it’s not always easy to see whether or not something meets your needs. This is especially true in many historic towns, where ordinances may prevent businesses from modifying their buildings to be more accessible. That’s why it surprises many first-time visitors to learn that St. Augustine takes accessibility very seriously! Many of the most popular restaurants, shops, and attractions are accessible to those in wheelchairs or who use mobility aids. Get the inside scoop on the best of St. Augustine’s handicap accessible attractions and book your stay with Agustin Inn today!

What You Need to Know Before Visiting St. Augustine

Getting Around

Thanks to Agustin Inn’s central location in downtown St. Augustine, most of our guests choose to park their cars for the duration of their stay. We have a private lot located a short distance away for our guests, though visitors with disabled placards can park for free at most city spots. That includes the paid parking located across the street from Agustin Inn! When you check in, ask our innkeeper for details. Be sure to also ask about buying tickets to the Old Town Trolley tour! The train goes to 23 fantastic attractions, including many of the ones listed below. They have a wheelchair-accessible train, so be sure to call the trolley for the schedule. When you purchase your trolley pass from Agustin Inn, you’ll have the option of buying a three-day pass instead of the standard one-day ticket. Just another one of the perks from booking with us!

Where to Stay

Too many times, finding a room that follows ADA guidelines means staying in the same boring chain hotel over and over again. Not at Agustin Inn! Greensboro is our stunning ADA accessible ground-floor room. It features a roll-in shower, a lower king-size bed, and oak hardwood floors. It’s accessible via the ramp on the side of the inn and comes with its own private entrance.  Our main lobby is also accessible to guests in wheelchairs. This is where you’ll enjoy our daily two-course breakfast, our neverending cookie jar, and your welcome champagne toast!

Tour St. George Street

When you head along St. George Street, you’ll notice that most of the shops have a sign letting disabled visitors know that assistance and ramp entrances are available. While many of the stores, restaurants, and museums along this pedestrian-only thoroughfare have a large step up, most provide a ramp for guests who need it. The street itself is also well-maintained, though some sections may be a little bumpy.

If you want to know which are our favorite shops and restaurants along this way, check out our blog on the best of St. George Street in St. Augustine!

Head to the Beach

St. Johns County, where St. Augustine is located, offers free beach wheelchairs on a first come, first served basis. Beachgoers must reserve the wheelchairs in advanced, and reservations must be made with at least three days of advanced notice.

Explore the Lightner Museum

A trip to St. Augustine isn’t complete without visiting the Lightner Museum! Inside, you’ll find exhibits showcasing the many collections of Otto C. Lightner. During his life, this publisher amassed an impressive array of collections. You’ll see everything from ornate musical instruments to elaborate Victorian glass vases. There are elevators in the museum that allow access to each of the floors, and the helpful staff is happy to point you in the right direction!

Visit the St. Augustine Distillery

Fans of artisan spirits shouldn’t miss the opportunity to get a free tour at the St. Augustine Distillery. From Monday through Saturday, free tours are available every 30 minutes. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how they make their small-batch bourbon, rum, vodka, and gin. After, you’ll get to enjoy free samples of delicious drinks made with each of their liquors. They also have a retail shop, which is accessible through the Ice Plant Bar. That means you can take a taste of St. Augustine home with you!

Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at the Whetstone Chocolates Store

Excellence is the standard at Whetstone Chocolate Store! What was once a home operation has transformed into a thriving business. Visitors to the factory can take a wonderful hour-long tour of the facility, which includes samples of their dark, milk, and white chocolates. It is wheelchair accessible, and there are group rates available for parties of 15 or more. Check their website to see the schedule and be ready to show up a little early to purchase your tickets!

Sip Samples at the San Sebastian Winery

What pairs better with chocolate than a delicious glass of wine? Luckily, the San Sebastian Winery is just one block away from the Whetstone Chocolates Store. Like the St. Augustine Distillery, they offer free tours that walk you through the winemaking process. After, you’ll join your guide at the bar to learn about wine tasting and sample some of San Sebastian’s most popular varieties! You will need to access the second floor of the winery, but there is an elevator available to guests who need it.

Enjoy an Afternoon at Castillo de San Marcos

One of the most iconic historic sites in St. Augustine is the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. This coquina fort once stood as a line of defense to our beautiful city. Today, visitors can explore the fortress, watch a weapons demonstration, or chat with the reenactors who are dressed in authentic period clothing. Plus, you’ll be able to enjoy one of the best views of St. Augustine.
