St Augustine Lighthouse
 

The Saint Augustine Lighthouse is located on the northern end of Anastasia Island. The massive tower took three years to build and was finally completed in 1874. It replaced the original St. Augustine Light House, which was located about 500 yards out to sea and fell into the ocean in 1880. Rising 165 feet above sea level, the Saint Augustine Lighthouse has over 219 steps you must climb in order to reach the top, as the lighthouse has no elevator. Tour the St. Augustine Light House and visit the lighthouse keepers suites in the museum along with other St. Augustine Lighthouse artifacts. Tours generally take about an hour. The lighthouse closes during inclement weather, call the observation deck at 904-829-0745 to check the tower's status. The last ticket to climb the tower is sold at 5:45 pm. The St. Augustine Light House site closes at 6:00 pm. During July and many holidays, they are open until 7:00 pm, with the latest ticket being sold at 6:45 pm. The St. Augustine Lighthouse is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Recently, the St. Augustine Light House has been one of the St Augustine Attractions featured on the hit SCI-FI television show, Ghost Hunters. The lighthouse and its buildings have an extensive history of paranormal activity as the daughters of one of the lighthouse keeper's passed away suddenly in an accident while the current tower was being constructed. The lighthouse is a very popular St Augustine Tour with night tours offered as part of the Dark of the Moon series where stories of the lighthouse's past are revealed.
