The colony of St Augustine was first founded by the Spanish when Pedro Menendez de Aviles landed on the Florida coast in September 1565. The famous admiral first spotted the land of St. Augustine FL on August 28th, which happened to be the feast day of Augustine of Hippo, thus he named the area San Augustine, after the renowned philosopher and Saint. The colony was the first established European colony in North America, as these events occurred 21 years prior to the English settlement at Roanoke Island in Virginia and 42 years prior to the settlement of Jamestown. Having survived several wars, conflicts and a few occupations, St Augustine is a city filled with diversity and creativity.
