St. Augustine Alligator Farm
Opened in 1893, the St. Augustine Alligator Farm
Zoological Park is one of Florida's oldest continuously
running attractions. Originally located in
St. Augustine
Beach at the terminus of a railway running to Anastasia
Island, two men began collecting alligators they found
in the area to attract tourists to their gift shop,
museum and souvenirs. Soon, the alligators were the main
attraction and in the 1920s, the St. Augustine Alligator
Farm moved to its current location on Anastasia Island
just outside of
Anastasia Island State Park. Today, the
park is not only one of St. Augustine’s favorite
attractions; it is a symbol of old Florida, of its
history and growth due to tourism in the late 19th and
early 20th centuries. With over 20 species of
crocodilians, a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds,
exhibits, animal performances and educational
demonstrations, the St Augustine Alligator Farm is a
must see during your Vacation in St Augustine FL.
The newest exhibit is the Komodo Dragon Exhibit. This
exhibit was the largest expansion in the zoo’s 115 year
history and features birds and reptiles including the
world’s most dangerous bird, the Double-wattled
Cassowary. Impressive for all ages, the St. Augustine
Alligator Farm is home to Maximo, a 1250 pound Saltwater
Crocodile. Maximo is the largest live animal in the park
and the exhibit offers underwater viewing windows for an
up-close-and-personal experience. Gomek Forever is one
of the park’s favorite exhibits. Gomek, an 18 foot long,
2,000 pound crocodile, was taxidermied and is the largest
crocodile ever on display.
If you’ve had enough of reptiles, head over to the
Wading Bird Rookery exhibit. Explore the native wetlands
of Florida and the birds that inhabit them. The best
time to see these herons, egrets, ibis, spoonbills and
wood storks is during late spring and early summer when
the birds breed and raise families. The Birds of Africa
is another unique exhibit with Africa’s largest bird
carrion eaters. View the scavenger nature of cape
griffon vultures, hooded vultures and marabou storks
during a daily feeding demonstration.
Other species at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm
include toucans, giant tortoises, deer parrots,
Australian kookaburras, pygmy marmoset (the world’s
smallest monkey), spider monkey and albino alligators.
