The Fort Matanzas National Monument is located at the
site of the historic fort it is named for. After
surviving over 5 centuries, the land and marsh areas
(over 100 acres to be exact) that surround Matanzas Bay
are best explored by visiting Fort Matanzas National
Monument, which is run by the National Park Service.
After its construction in 1740, Fort Matanzas served as
a protective fortress for the Spanish colony of St
Augustine. In 1819, the United States took control over
the lands of Florida and rendered Fort Matanzas useless,
leaving it to ruin. After ardent restoration efforts
took place in 1916-1924, Fort Matanzas National Monument
is now a St Augustine Attraction ready to be explored.
Want to tour the Fort Matanzas National Monument? This
St Augustine Attraction is only accessibly by guided
boat tours. Open every day of the year except for
Christmas Day, a ferry service leaves from the visitor
center dock area every hour at half past the hour
between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm. The free guided ferry tour
lasts approximately 45-50 minutes.
Castillo de San Marcos Fort is located less than a half a
mile from Agustin Inn! In the early days of St.
Augustine, the Spanish used wooden forts to protect the
city. After 9 of these wooden forts were burned to the
ground, Queen Mariana of Spain commissioned the
construction of a fort made of more durable materials.
The Castillo de San Marcos was finished in 1695 and is
St. Augustine’s most historically significant structure.
It is due to the Castillo de San Marcos Fort that St.
Augustine has never been conquered. The structure was
built in the style of a masonry star fort and made from
coquina rock hauled across the Matanzas Bay from
Anastasia Island. Workers were brought all the way
from Cuba to help construct this massive structure!
Although siege attempts were made on the fort in 1702
and 1740, the stalwart fort stood strong and
successfully protected St. Augustine.
