St Augustine Welcomes 170 Ft El Galeon Ship to Municipal Marina

05.24.13 07:52 PM

In addition to our regular events and amazing attractions,  St Augustine has another surprise for locals and visitors for the next several days! As part of our celebration of Florida’s founding in 1513; known as Viva 500, the city welcomes a massive replica ship much like those, which set sail in Ponce de Leon’s voyage to find La Florida centuries ago.

St. Augustine, Fl is one of only four Florida port stops for the  Viva Florida 500 Voyage of the El Galeón as it sails a historic route similar to Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León’s 500 years ago. The ship originally set sail from Puerto Rico on April 1st and arrived in St Augustine this very week. The massive ship will remain in our marina for a total of 12 days – May 23rd through June the 9th.

El Galeón is a 170-foot, 495-ton, authentic wooden replica of a galleon that was part of Spain’s West Indies fleet. It is owned by the  Nao Victoria Foundation of Sevilla, Spain.

While in port, the ships decks will be open to public visits daily. The St Augustine Municipal Marina is just steps away from the Agustin Inn, so plan a visit while you are staying with us. Guests will have the chance to learn about the history that began 500 years ago while admiring the craftsmanship and unique splendor of these galleons that reached the state’s coast centuries ago.

The ship will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Marina, 111 Avenida Menendez. Tickets are $8 for children age 12 and under and $15 for adults.

Information and tickets for El Galeón are available at  http://www.vivaflorida.org/. Tickets are also available on-site at the Red Train Booth outside the marina.
