St Augustine Lighthouse Makes Another Top Ten List

09.9.13 06:56 PM

When visiting the nation’s oldest city, there are so many attractions to visit. Not only is the city absolutely beautiful at any time of the year, but it is here you will find many sights that are mentioned in top ten lists around the world! Mentioned heavily in many travel articles is our notorious light display, our annual events around the holidays, the Castillo de San Marcos, our beautiful churches, and much more! One that has received much-deserved attention lately is our lighthouse. In a recent article, the St. Augustine Lighthouse was noted as one of the top-ten in the entire world. Making it to the top (no pun intended) with lighthouses in Germany, Ireland, and Maine, we made number 5 on this list!

A Little History on the Structure

St. Augustine was home to the very first lighthouse in the state of Florida though the very first structure fell into the sea after the foundation eroded. The newer and current lighthouse was constructed and completed in the year 1874. The building received its indoor plumbing in the year 1907 and the light shined bright electrically for the first time in 1936 and automated in 1955.

Tales of the early lightkeepers can be learned from the Lighthouse museum, which is open to the public each day as of 1994. Admission fees, which include a climb of 219 stairs (yes you are able to rest along the way) and the maritime museum help support continued preservation of the lighthouse and maritime archeological programs.

The Darker Side to the Bright Light

Another tid bit of information about the St. Augustine Lighthouse you may want to know is that it is recognized as one of the city’s most haunted sites. Often gaining nation-wide attention from the televised cast of Ghost Hunters, the lighthouse is said to be haunted by the ghost of the early lightkeeper and his daughters who experienced tragedy of the worst kind.

The haunted side may be explored when joining the Lighthouse’s very own ghost tour or the Ghosts and Gravestones Frightseeing Tour, which drives guests to the Lighthouse Park every single night. Be sure to ask our innkeepers for further information on these tours and availability while you are here or planning a visit with us in the future.
