Celebrate St. Augustines 448th Birthday on September 7th
09.2.13 07:23 PM
St. Augustine, Florida was founded exactly 448 years ago on September the 7th, 2013. This anniversary will be commemorated on this very day and all are invited to attend. This Heritage Event is hosted by Mission Nombre de Dios and Florida Living History, Inc. Each year the day is commemorated leading up to an even larger birthday bash in 2015 when we celebrate our 450th!
For those of you who have visited the Fountain of Youth in past times, be sure to visit this year as you will be surprised with the many additions to the property, which include a new observation dock, a 16th century boat building project, reconstuction of the original Mission of Nombre de Dios, and much more.
Whats so famous about the Fountain of Youth site you ask? Many things as the area spans 15 acres of archeological dig sites and is located in the same span of land first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and settled by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565.
Historic St. Augustine is the oldest continuously-occupied European settlement in the United States. Contary to many people's knowledge, we were here 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, and 42 years before Jamestown, Virginia!
