Art Galleries and Museums

The Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, Matanzas River, have created some truly gorgeous spots along the bay in St. Augustine Florida. Its no surprise that for centuries St Augustine Florida has been a hub for arts and cultural endeavors. Home to many fascinating museums, emporiums and art galleries, the city has inspired some of the most famous artists of our time. Our St. Augustine Bed and Breakfast is located right in the historic, walking and shopping district. We are convenient to St. George Street and Charlotte Street, two historic streets in the Old City that contain numerous St Augustine art galleries and antique dealers. Several of them have been in business for more than 50 years.

One St. Augustine Art Gallery in particular, Cutter & Cutter Fine Art, Inc. has more than 100 years experience in the art world. Cutter & Cutter Fine Art, Inc. has over eight different locations in St Augustine including five enormous art galleries. Their professional staff has helped visitors to St Augustine procure numerous original works and limited edition fine art prints. Also galleries like Loves' Art Emporium, City Gate Gallery, and Galeria del Mar have maintained a reputation for their collections of fine art. To explore something a bit different, check out The Imaginarium, a gallery devoted to Dr. Seuss. With a massive, in stock inventory of Dr. Seuss limited editions, this gallery is a wonderful place to spend the day inside Dr. Seuss's magical world.

In addition to the numerous St Augustine Art Galleries, the Old City is also home to some renowned museums, including The Lightner Museum. Commonly referred to as the "Smithsonian of the South" the Lightner Museum is one of St Augustine's most noted attractions. The museum's structure originally housed Henry Flagler's historic Alcazar Hotel, one of Florida's first major resort hotels. Built in 1888, the building is one of the city's most beautiful buildings with its unique architecture and manicured landscaping. Spend the day touring The Lightner Museum and don’t miss the "Splendors of the Gilded Age" collections from St. Augustine's heyday in the Victorian period. For more information on the city's early resort history, read our St. Augustine Florida History page and visit the Florida Heritage Museum. The Old St Augustine Jail is the home of the heritage museum and the jail itself is a very unique St Augustine Attraction. Built by Henry Flagler during St Augustine's Golden Era, the Old St Augustine Jail's building resembles a large, grand hotel. Visitors young and old get a kick out of touring the sheriff's quarters and prisoners cells.

Lastly, two unique museums, Ripley's Believe or Not and the Potter's Wax Museum are two unconventional types of museums to tour in St. Augustine. Ripley's Believe or Not houses Robert Ripley's strange artifacts and findings from his travels, and the wax museum was America's first wax museum! Visit and see over 160 wax figures including some of the most famous celebrities of our time!
